My “Theme from Ratman” was written as a score to the short film “Ratman” directed and written by my friend Maya Napoli-Grover. The film tracks a young man’s spiritual journey as he begins to question his once religious practice, specifically God’s presence as well as the nature of humanity. He struggles mentally and is incapable of functioning and is rot with confusion and even despair. “Theme from Ratman” is played as he reflects on the purest moments of humanity, a fight between parents, a dancing couple, or even just gazing upon nature. He acknowledges the beauty, and true nature, of life, allowing him to smile, even if life continues to be unknown and incapable of understanding fully.
As the leading role especially, I connect to the main character’s spiritual struggle, as well as the relieving power of nature and humanity. I find that while nature and humanity may be incomprehensible themselves, there remains a beauty, and an opportunity to live despite life’s evident difficulties. I had the privilege to score a scene that I couldn’t relate more too, complimenting the sense of awe as one gazes upon the colors of life.
I hope one can watch “Ratman”, hear my piece, and feel accompanied in their own spiritual struggles; I hope one can be encouraged to allow nature to heal, and alleviate the fears of a petrifying world.
